About Patricia Lockwood

I was born in Miami and became aware of the
beautiful colors of the flowers and the lush vegetation at an early age. I was
18 months old and a hurricane had blown the roof off our house and I remember
laying in my crib and looking up at the sky and watching the clouds drifting by
overhead.

I've been an artist all my life and have loved painting and drawing. I
remember the day I did my first drawing. It was of my left hand. I was three
years old. When I was five, I started doing sculpture and have my first relief
sculpture on my dining-room wall today. Although I am largely self-taught, I've
always taken any art courses offered in schools and colleges wherever we
lived.
Art
has been the driving force of my life and actually saved my life a few years
ago. I was diagnosed with ALS in 1992. In 1998, my diagnosis was changed to
Primary Lateral Sclerosis, a form of ALS characterized by inability to walk and
talk. In 2003, my younger son, a musician, came into my bedroom and said "Mom,
you that painting you did for me in the seventies? A friend wants you
to paint one for him with a sax in it, instead of a trumpet." I was almost
comatose from pain medication, but his words got through, and I got up out of
bed, so weak I had to hold on to my easel in order to sit up and paint that
picture. And that was the beginning of my return to life - and beauty, and
joy.
It is now 2007, and I am feeling stronger, better and more joyful in
life everyday. I'm taking courses in art, computing and Photoshop Elements and
my life is ever expanding and interesting. Never give up, no matter what your
problem is. Keep trying and praying and you too, will have your miracle.
